During the Media Discussion held at Presidential Staff Office, Jakarta, February 12th 2019, The Minister explained three main pillars of The Ministry to achieve The President’s mission on “Our Sea is Our Future, Indonesia Becomes The World’s Maritime Power”. “First, is by enforcing the sovereignty of Indonesian seas, second is by sustainability, and the third one is actually not a program, but it will be the result of the implementation of both pillars which the result will be a prosperity or welfare,” said Mrs.Susi.

The Minister particularly told the audience about the policy in sinking the foreign illegal vessels to enforce the sovereignty. In the past years, around ten thousand foreign vessels back and forth caught fishes illegally in the Indonesian seas. To date, 448 foreign illegal fishing vessels have been drowned by The Ministry. The aim of this policy is to give a punishment and a deterrent effect according to the prevailing law.

She emphasized, 448 drowned foreign vessels should be seen more than just a number, but it’s the result of sovereignty enforcement. “See and assess our availability of natural resources at sea, it increased up to 12,5 million tons while previously there’s only 7,1 million tons at sea. Our biomass also increased almost three times more than other ocean in the world,” said Mrs. Susi. She added that the fishery export and import balance sheet also increased steadily every year.

She also underlined this law is applied to foreign vessels. She emphasized that she had talked with Ambassadors from various countries, such as Thailand, the Philippines, China, and Australia regarding the moratorium. “The moratorium for Indonesian vessel is a big hoax news which spread by the media. What I mean is moratorium is for ex-foreign vessels only. It’s not for Indonesian vessels,” said Mrs. Susi.

She emphasized that the government action in implementing various policies was not to restrict businessmen from taking profits, but to keep fish resources available. This purpose refers to the second pillar that the Ministry fights for sustainability.
